Wolfgang Press Chestnut Cabaret 2/7/89

The word eclectic is the only way to describe them. Throughout the band’s initial incarnation in the late 80s and 90s – a run that saw them go from bleak post punk to proto-industrial funk to hip hop inspired avant pop – their eclecticism came not only from a place of curiosity and a desire to experiment, but also an almost pathological adversity to repeating themselves. To such a degree that when they finally did start treading water, they split up.

Pere Ubu

Cleveland band Pere Ubu born from the ashes of Rocket From the Tombs (a band that also produced the Dead Boys), the nascent six-piece Pere Ubu began tinkering with its avant-garage sound — a polyhedral hybrid of Detroit- styled guitar squall, kraut-rock drone and, perhaps most important, the death knells of Cleveland’s collapsing industrial infrastructure — in the summer of 1975, self-releasing “30 Seconds Over Tokyo,” one of the first indie singles of the punk era, by year’s end. –Trouser Press

les Thugs – Live Chestnut Cabaret – 10/3/91

Les Thugs were a punk band from France. Their records are distributed in North-America by Sub Pop Records.

The founding members of Les Thugs were two brothers, Eric and Christophe Sourice, from Angers, France. The Sourice brothers were teenagers in 1977 and were influenced by the English punk wave that was sweeping through France. Without knowing how to play any instruments, the band used the DIY ethic. Their first band was founded in 1979, a group called IVG. They then played in the groups Dazibao and Stress with Gérald Chabaud, Thierry Méanard and a fifth member (Philippe Brix) as singer.

In April 1983, following the departure of the lead singer, they officially became Les Thugs. The band’s name refers to the historical brotherhood of the Thuggee, followers of the goddess Kali, and not directly to the English loan word thug. Eric became the lead singer and the band quickly created its own repertoire, performing its first concerts in bars in Angers and surrounding towns. – from John Peel site

New Model Army – Chestnut Cabaret 6/13/89

New Model Army are an English rock band formed in Bradford, West Yorkshire, in 1980 by lead vocalist, guitarist and principal songwriter Justin Sullivan, bassist Stuart Morrow and drummer Phil Tompkins. Sullivan has been the only continuous member of the band, which has seen numerous line-up changes in its four-decade history. Their music draws on influences across the musical spectrum, from punk and folk to soul, metal and classical. Sullivan’s lyrics, which range from directly political through to spiritual and personal, have always been considered as a key part of the band’s appeal.
Whilst having their roots in punk rock, the band have always been difficult to categorise. In 1999, when asked about this, Sullivan said, “We’ve been labelled as punks, post-punks, Goth, metal, folk – the lot, but we’ve always been beyond those style confines”. Following a large turnover of personnel, both permanent and as touring members, as of 2024 New Model Army comprise Sullivan, Dean White, Michael Dean and Ceri Monger.

The Vels – Chestnut Cabaret – July 12th, 1985

The Vels began when Charles Hanson, former member of the 1970s New Orleans punk group, The Normals, invited Chris Larkin and Alice Desoto to join him for a show at the now defunct Love Club in Philadelphia. The band used lo-tech synthesizers, drum machine, and bass guitar. The Philadelphia Inquirer music critic, Lee Paris was there, and wrote a positive review. The Vels were a prominent fixture on the Philadelphia music scene of the early 1980s. They caught the attention of Mercury Records and were signed to a recording contract.

The Vels’ first album, Velocity was recorded in Nassau, Bahamas at the Compass Point Recording Studio, and was produced by Steven Stanley, who also produced the Tom Tom Club. Their second album, House of Miracles was produced by Steve Levine, who had produced Culture Club.

A little bit of Philly music trivia happened on this night. Virtually unannounced, The Pretenders opened for The Vels at this show, this was the night before Live Aid in Philadelphia where The Pretenders appeared that next day.

Members: Alice DeSoto, Chris Larkin, Charles Hanson

A music video for their song “Look My Way” was filmed in London, and became popular during the early days of MTV.

In 1986, The Vels toured the U.S. as the opening act for The Psychedelic Furs, but disbanded in 1987. Keyboardist and singer, Chris Larkin, died from complications due to pneumonia, on November 21, 2007.

Del-Lords – Live in Philly 1986

In New York in the mid-‘80s, four veteran New York musicians united to form the Del-Lords: Scott Kempner from the Dictators, Eric Ambel from Joan Jett’s Blackhearts, future Cracker drummer Frank Funaro and thundering bassist Manny Caiati. Key songwriter Kempner said his vision “was to create a band that would feature four singers performing my songs — an East Coast Beach Boys if you will.” But rather than singing about girls and cars, the Del-Lords sang about things that mattered to them: the everyday grind of life and how it affected the band and those around them.
