Half of a live from WKDU in studio on Jackie’s show and two demo tapes from late 80’s early 90’s Philly band Ashtray. They were Joe Leifheit – (guitar, vocals), Sarah Howls – (bass, vocals), Steve Fujita – (guitar) & Bill Bussone – (drums). Ashtray also released a 7″ and cd that I will try to add at some point later. Plus they have a song on the Rave Recods comp – Please! Don’t Lick the Walls.

The members of the band were Revrnd Butcher (Bass), Tony Chicken (Drums, Percussion) Greg Loop (Guitar), Andrew Redman (Vocals) Their full length Rave Records album (In the Elbow Room) is available on spotify and digitally at apple. The 2nd song and beginning of the third song were cut off on the tape. Thanks for the tape Jackie.

It was a very long time ago. It may have been our first performance for radio. I know we were psyched to be there. I remember the headphone mix sounding nothing like us and was a bit thrown by that. We played everything really fast, or sped up during tunes, which was kind of our m.o. Nice to hear what Jim Hostetter was doing on guitar and vocals. We always made such a racket live that I could never really tune in to what he was doing. This set is the band after our first e.p. came out and we were getting songs and our chops together for recording our album in Spring of ‘90. “Left in the Dark” is a cover of the Vertebrats. – except for the Vertebrats cover, all words and music by me, publishing: Bang Quack Music. Hostetter took some lyrical liberties live a la Westerberg. – Andrew Chalfen
Mudpie on Jackie’s WKDU show from Wednesday August 10, 1988
The members of the band were:

Steven and Tom (gtr/vocals and bass, both from Lancaster’s The Real Gone & Jack Lord’s Hair) formed Mudpie in Philadelphia in the fall of 1987, recruiting Bernie (drums, backing vocals, ex- Lost Barbeque & More Fiends) at Philadelphia Record Exchange. They rehearsed at Bernie’s West Philly twin near 49th and Springfield, sharing the basement with Trained Attack Dogs and Van Gogh’s Ear.
Mudpie played at local haunts like Bacchanal and Tops in 1988, and recorded two tapes: the best-left-unheard “Mudhenge,” and the “York” EP. Their sound at the time was influenced by contemporary power trios like Volcano Suns, Minutemen/Firehose, Dinosaur, Huskers, Agitpop, etc. The name was inspired by Budgie.
This live WKDU set in August 1988 was the next-to-last performance of this line-up. After that, Steven went on to play drums in Blue for a spell.
Steven and Tom reformed Mud Pie sideways as a very different home-recording outfit from 1989-1992. Tom also formed Rocknoceros in the early 90s. In 2003 Steven and Tom re-formed and continue to the present day as Mud Pie Sun, releasing several tapes and CDs and occasionally playing live.

The Gelcaps began as a solo project in 1993 with Derelict Hotel alumnus Doug Anson making improvisational music on a cheap guitar, Casio keyboard and effect pedals. In ’94 he started working with Vibrolux guitarist John Boothman, a.k.a “the king of noise.”
Anson played chunky and repetitive rhythm guitar riffs while Boothman filled out the soundscape with drones and plinks. The band’s first EP, Death Star From Budokan, was a remarkable balance of catchy pop-punk and trippy noise rock.
After going through several members, the lineup solidified in the fall of ’95 when bassist Mark Nolan and drummer Spencer Sweeney joined the ranks. They kept the bottom end just tight enough to give the arrangements structure and depth. The second Gelcaps release, the single “Cows,” was more straight-ahead, but still memorable.
A few months later, they started work on their third release. Songwriting was going so well that by the time July rolled around, the single had turned into a mini-album entitled 24 Hour Pythons.
In late July, everything fell apart. Boothman quit the band over creative differences. On July 27, Nolan died in a drug-related accident.
