Flipper / Fang / Iron Cross – Love Hall 5/21/83

Jeff Jenkins played part of a live tape from the May 21, 1983 show with Flipper/Fang/Heart Attack/Iron Cross/Urban Waste/Murphy’s Law/YDI/F.O.D. @ Love Hall – Unfortunately it was not all the bands but at least we got Flipper, Fang and Iron Cross. Maybe some day the full tape of this show will be found. But for now here is what we have.

Wünderband

Self titled cd by Mid to late 90’s Power Pop band Wünderband with Derek Ayers – Drums & Vocals, Robert Fanelli – Bass & Vocals, and Kyle Kelso -Guitar & Vocals.
Currently Robert and Derek are in Split Aura.

Review by Pemberton Roach
The “official” follow-up to several self-released EPs and seven-inch singles, Wünderband’s debut full-length CD release is a ’90s power-pop tour de force, full of beautifully chiming guitars, solid drum beats and melodic, McCartney-esque basslines. The band’s songs are top-notch, and Wunderband’s two writers have wonderfully complementary styles. Kyle Kelso favors the more straight-ahead rock/Cheap Trick-style tunes, while Robert Fanelli explores a more harmonically experimental, XTC-influenced style. Lyrically, Kelso nails the teenage angst thing in a perfect, ’50s kind of way (mentions of “broken glasses” and “locker shrines” take the place of the usual paeans to suicide and drugs) with songs like “Lunchroom Blues” and “Pinup.” Fanelli’s points are often somewhat more obscure but no less effective, often striking a perfect balance between the heartbreaking with the absurd. Beautifully recorded, Wunderband has the well-produced sheen of a major-label album, and the effect works well with the band’s expertly crafted material.

Freemartin

Freemartin was from Philadelphia & formed in late 1991. The band consisted of a famous museum curator, an African taxi driver, and a radical book publisher. The band gave all of their releases away, not charging any money for them, and played their shows for no admission. They were on my show on WKDU – the tape doesn’t say when it was – I assume 93 or 94 most likely. The audio drops out at a few places I tried to fix it the best I could. Also I put up there first 7 inch. I don’t have there follow up album All Living Things Still Living but if I come across it I’ll add it.

Bardo Pond

A hard band to describe so I’m going to use the one fromtheir own siteBardo Pond’s music traverses space rock, acid rock, post-rock, shoegaze, noise, Krautrock and psychedelia. They have been around since the early 90’s and have a lot of releases. While writing this I feel like it has been a while since I’ve seen them but hopefully I’ll rectify that sometime soon. I’m just putting up a few live videos and live tapes (there are many many more out there) – Pete Fasolo’s Live video from Astrocade and when they were on his WKDU show Drug Music. Plus two Chicago show from the Aadam Jacobs Audio Archive.
