The Clean – Live from Johnny Brenda’s 06/06/12

The Clean Live from Johnny Brenda’s in Philadelphia June 6, 2012.
Just filmed a few songs – some are not complete and I didn’t have a tracklist so they are most likely not in the order they were played. I first heard the Clean (David Kilgour, Hamish Kilgour (RIP) & Robert Scott) when kdu got the Tuatara – A Flying Nun Compilation in the Mid-80s. Although I instantly became a fan of all the bands on the comp and it opened me up to the whole New Zealand scene, the Clean were my favorite. I soon go the compilation not sure if was album or cd at that point and tried to find anything by them. The one problem of discovering this band this way was they had broken up in 1982, so I figured I would never see them. I did manage to see the ex-members current band (ie. The Bats, The Mad Scene and David’s solo bands). Then they reunited and I got to see them at Maxwell’s and then more new music and tours that brought them to Philly. These vidoe clips were shoot on my phone from their show at Johnny Brenda’s. I wasn’t sure I was going to put them up but with the deeply sad passing of Hamish and no other clips that I could find for that show I decided to add them here.

Jean-Paul Sartre Experience – JC Dobbs 7/27/93

The Jean-Paul Sartre Experience, later renamed JPS Experience after a lawsuit by the estate of Jean-Paul Sartre, were part of the 2nd wave of New Zealand’s Flying Nun Records Bands. I first heard them through their song Flex which was on the I’m In Love with These Times compilation and video comp. It was unlike any of the other bands on that and really stood out. They had a wide variety of sounds over their 3 albums and many eps. Most (maybe all?) is collected in I Like Rain: The Story Of The Jean-Paul Sartre Experience
My tape has no information on it but I believe this show was at JC Dobbs – part of the Noisyland tour with The Bats and Straitjacket Fits on July 27, 1993.

Straitjacket Fits Live from JC Dobbs – 7/27/93

Straitjacket Fits
Straitjacket Fits sprang from the ashes of the DoubleHappys, a trio (named after a particularly loud brand of firecracker) that formed in Dunedin, New Zealand in the early ’80s. The band members were Shayne Carter, John Collie, David Wood and Andrew Brough. I believe this show is from JC Dobbs but I’m not sure exactly when. Most likely it is from 1993 since it has songs from all of their releases up through Blow. When the Straightjacket Fits broke up Shayne Carter formed Dimmer

CakeKitchen – Khyber 6/25/92

CakeKitchen is Graeme Jefferies with various other musicians. Graeme had been in Nocturnal Projections and This Kind of Punishment with his brother Peter Jefferies. I’m not 100% sure but judging by the time frame it was probably Graeme with bassist Rachael King and drummer Robert Key. This show was on June 25, 1992 at the Khyber opening for Seam. Lots of tracks off the World of Sand album and the earlier Time Flowing Backwards album. Greame is still putting out releases – the latest is Kangaroos In My Top Paddock. For more on Cakekitchen (including buying cd’s directly from the band) check out the Cakekitchen Facebook Page.

Alastair Galbraith & Peter Jefferies Live Khyber – Philadelphia 08/19/93

Alastair Galbraith & Peter Jefferies from (I believe) their first tour of America. This was recorded in the audience at the Khyber on 8/19/93. I tired to figure out all of the titles but both of them were in a lot of bands and other projects so I couldn’t get them all. If anyone can fill the titles in please let me know. I was and still am a big fan of New Zealand music and they were in some of the best bands like Nocturnal Projections, Plagal Grind, A Handful of Dust, The Rip, This Kind of Punishment and all of their solo albums and projects. I skipped going on a vacation road trip because this show was happening while I was supposed to be on vacation. The show turned out to be worth missing the trip. If you want to check out more this is Alastair Galbraith on Siltbreeze’s site and Peter Jefferies’ site
Also here is a pdf of an interview with Peter Jefferies from a New Zealand zine Alley Oop
Thanks to Jim for the updates on the Peter Jefferies song titles.
