Swinging Bachelors Of Science were a band from Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Larry Bailis – vocals, Jeffrey Slott – Guitar & Vocals, Jonathan Schug- Bass, Eddie Beinlich – Drums. Jeffrey and Larry were first in a band called the Bolivians. When that band split up they continued as The Neo Duo with just guitars and vocals. In 1986 they added drums and bass and the band name was changed to Swinging Bachelors Of Science. The band played all over Philadelphia (Live from Chestnut Cabaret below) and broke up in the spring of 1988 having only released one single (also below).

Mondo Topless is a tried and true garage band formed in 1992 in Philadelphia, that took their name from the 1966 Russ Meyers film of the same name.
This is their first demo tape called Squish Squish. Making up the band at this time was Sam Steinig – vocals, organ, / Rick Halter – guitar / Juliette Watts – bass / Bob Dicks – bass / Eddie Beinlich – drums. The mid 90’s during the early days of Ken when they were an all girl band with a guy singer. It was always good to see a Ken show (and still is) the band were having fun and the audience were all totally loving it and having a great time. It simply was (and always will be) a good time. This lineup of Ken was Marc Beck (Revelogic, Heroics, Vick Logic) was the singer, with the two current members of the Ken – Lauren on guitar and Marina on Bass and two ex-members Judith also on guitar and Toni on Drums. For newer Ken go see their bandcamp releases below or Facebook Page
Another fun mid 90s Philly band. They played all the Philly venues of the time Frienz Tavern, old Boot & saddle, Clark Park, Khyber, etc. I don’t have as many flyers for 90s bands as I do for 80s put as I find any I will add them to the post. Mel’s RockPile was Matt Pond (Matt Pond PA) – Vocals& Guitar, Paul Hazlet (Blue, Scab Cadillac)- Drums, Tracy Stanton (ex 700 club owner) – Bass and J.D. Frochlich – Guitar. They released 2 & 7 inches that are included in this post. The picture is by Toni Farina (stolen from her FB I hope you don’t mind Toni)
Added 2 more demo tapes (that I don’t know the real names of) – Thanks Jackie
Some videos that I have had up on YouTube but not up on this blog so I’m adding them to this post. Die Kreuzen were one of my favorite live bands and they always put on a great show. The JC Dobbs video was one I had owned on VHS but I loaned it out and never got back so I was so happy Lenny (RIP) had it and let me put it up.
Thanks Crunch Productions for the tapes
Jesus Lizard from the Khyber December 10, 1991. Late 80’s into the early 90’s it seemed like they played the Khyber at least twice a year. I have no idea how many of those shows I made but probably almost all of them. Kind of bummed I didn’t make their reunion show a few years ago. Jesus Lizard was vocalist David Yow, bassist David Wm. Sims (Both from Scratch Acid), guitarist Duane Denison (Cargo Cult) and drummer Mac McNeilly Jesus Lizard Touch & Go site
This is from the Thirteen record release party which was at Long in the Tooth Records in Center City Philly on Saturday June 29th 2013. I messed up and missed the beginning of the first song – sorry. (Bio stolen from their web site) The Thirteen play loud, raucous Rock ‘N’ Roll with plenty of melody and hooks. Think of all the bastard children of Chuck Berry from the Stones to the Faces to the Replacements on down and it will give you some approximation of what this power-pop trio is shooting for.
Back in 2007, the band was not much more than a studio project born of singer/songwriter Sal Cannestra’s desperate desire to make music again after relocating to Philadelphia. He met up with Figgs bassist and producer extraordinaire Pete Donnelly who offered to put together a band to help bring Sal’s songs to life. With the help of drummers Chuck Treece (McRad, Bad Brains, Urge Overkill) and Matty Muir (U.S. Rails) as well as lead guitarist Joe Iacovella they recorded the band’s debut, The Secret History of the Thirteen.
But no self-respecting band stays in the studio forever and by the record’s release in Fall 2008, Joe and Sal wanted to bring these songs to the people. So they recruited kindred soul Peter Santa Maria (Jukebox Zeros) on bass and… well, let’s say a short succession of various drummers, and started playing shows around Philly. A few more personnel changes in 2011 left Sal the sole guitar play but also saw the addition of Jack Kontes (The Flyswatters) as the band’s first full-time drummer.
Summer 2012 found The Thirteen ready to record again. This time Peter handled the engineering himself and then placed the tracks in the hands of Stephen Egerton (Descendents, ALL, FLAG) for mixing and mastering. The resulting album, LIFT – OFF!, showcases 12 tunes brimming with garage rock urgency, laced with infectious riffs and more than its share of clever, heartfelt lyrics. The band will be playing up and down the east coast in support of this delicious slice of wax and look forward to winning over new friends every place they play.

To the best of my knowledge all of the music links are for recordings that are out of print but if you enjoy what you hear, buy other records and support the artist(s) and/or labels: if you don't approve of having your material displayed and would like to have it down...
