I was given a few photos of McRad to put up so I originally was going to put up the videos (see below) and then add the Dormant Force EP but searching I found that “Dominant Force” & “Absence of Sanity” plus a few other tracks are combined on the Lion Pure 2LP available on bandcamp. So, instead here are a couple of Crunch videos, the new-old photos and flyers.
Three Foot Acid were a short lived band from Philadelphia that featured the former Serial Killers singer Paul Bearer. They recorded one demo before exiting the stage. The sound for both of these shows was copied from old video tapes. They are both audience recordings and the sound quality is good.
Check out Paul’s interview on Loud Fast Philly
Thanks to Pete for giving me a copy of the Demo Tape – check out his site Sounds of Tomorrow
Head Cheese was a post-punk band from the early 80s. While attending University of the Arts Susan Ottaviano meet Jade Lee and they formed a band with their friend Celeste Ries. They recorded one 7″ at Third Story recording studio. I don’t have mp3’s of that 7 inch so instead I’ve included YouTube videos for the three songs. What i do have is a booklet that they put out – to be honest I am not 100% sure I put the pages in the right order but please check it out. Head Cheese Booklet
The video for Jungle Jam was shot as a film project around Philly
Susan Ottaviano (who later went on to New Wave stardom in Book of Love) on the making of her Philly band Head Cheese’s single ‘Jungle Jam’ from 1982:
We recorded “Jungle Jam” at Third Story music, an 8 track studio in Philadelphia, in 1981. It was produced by David Javelosa, who we met at the East Side Club. He was performing with his group Los Microwaves at the time. The ‘Jungle Jam’ video was filmed in and around Philly and is truly a love story to the city. There are scenes on Broad Street, the gargoyles in City Hall, a basement on League street and a pig’s head from the Italian Market. The Jungle Jam video has just recently been posted on YouTube. One of the original directors of that video even works for Pixar now. He said that he had more fun on our movie than he does today. You should check it out. It’s pretty funny.”
Pass the Elixer cassette tape comp put out by Freedom is Cancer Zine in 1987
Description of the comp:
Like a lot of people in the 1980s me and some of my friends made a fanzine. From 1985 until 1987 we printed 10 issues. For issue 9 we made a compilation tape with 90 minutes of solid Punk. Back then, because of different influences and ideas there was a diversity of sounds. And while all these bands are rooted in Punk none of them sound the same. We made our band choices to emphasize that diversity. The most well known band here is Disorder and the most obscure is P.K.G. from Torrence California who only recorded one 5-song demo before exiting. Each band has a full page in the zine. Sound quality is very good.
Dirt Search Headlight – Live Khyber Pass, Philadelphia 1995
Dirt Search Headlight were former members of Red Herring and Carnival of Shame. They played around Philly for a couple of years, recorded some demos but never released anything. Unfortunately I don’t have the whole show tape it was lost it except for this one song.
Thanks for sending this to me Brett Noise Addiction II
Also Thanks Mark (Clams Cassino) Fletcher for the updated info and info on his new music (see link above)
Endorphins were started by Paul Albert who was from Canada and doing a degree at University Of Pennsylvania. The line up on this demo was the original line up. Sometime after this recording Amy left and over the next few years they had a few different lead guitarists as fourth members. Paul Albert was the main song writer. In 1984 the band had a flexi disc released with The Bob music paper.
The band = Paul Albert – Vocals/Guitar, Pat Ream – Bass, Eddie Beinlich – Drums, Amy Rican – Electric Violin.
These demos were recorded at a studio in Old City that was at about 2nd and Spruce.
Eddie Beinlich later played drums on the Mondo Topless Squish demo.
On these Endorphins recordings Frank Bower is the 4th member and is playing lead guitar on the practice recordings in 1983 and Jay Medley is playing lead guitar on the unreleased single. In 1984 the band had a 4-song flexi disc sold through the Philly music newspaper The Bob. In 1984 and 1985 they released a couplr of tapes and had several songs on several comp. tapes in the UK. In 1986 they had one song on the Beasts From The East com LP released on Voxx Records.
The A’s were one of the early bands to get major label notice from Philly underground. They were around from 1978 to 1983 with Richard Bush (lead vocals), Rick DiFonzo (guitar), Rocco Notte (keyboards), Terry Bortman (bass), and Michael Snyder (drums). This is a radio concert recording of them from Emerald City in Cherry Hill.
Eddie Hacksaw was a pioneering DJ at WXPN in the early days of the Philadelphia scene. Personally I never got to meet him but I’ve always heard he was a great DJ that did a lot to promote the local scene. Tragically he died in a car accident August 1986.
This is a recording of one of his shows from December 1982
Anthrophobia has been around a long time with many lineup and a few location changes the one constant member is singer Frank Phobia. These demos and rehearsal represent the beginnings of that band in Reading Pennsylvania through the Philly years. The Rehearsal and first Demo were recorded during 1985 in Reading. Soon after that Frank moved to Philadelphia and put together a new line up and recorded a few more demos and a track on Discpan Hands / A Philadelphia Compilation The 1988 demo is still generally Punk based but has a definite metal edge to it. The 1992 demo was recorded when Grunge was king and that style is reflected there. There is the added benefit of Suzi Gardner from L7 on backing vocals. A couple of these songs were released on a 7″ single. In 2014 the original members of the band reformed as The Anthrophobia Founding Fathers. They played a few reunion shows and released a cd Endgame, I also included pictures at the bottom of this post form the Founding Fathers show I went to at Young Ones Records in Kutztown. In between and since Anthrophobia has released a lot of great albums you can listen or better yet buy them at their bandcamp page. They have a new EP called Altered States coming out August 14th 2020.
To the best of my knowledge all of the music links are for recordings that are out of print but if you enjoy what you hear, buy other records and support the artist(s) and/or labels: if you don't approve of having your material displayed and would like to have it down...
