Mike Rep – Khyber 08/07/1993 Siltbreeze Show

Mike Rep from Siltbreeze night at the Khyber with Temple of Bon Matin, Strapping Field Hands, V-3 and GBV, From the Siltbreeze site: Before there were peckerwoods buzzing about lo-fi, Mike Rep—fed by a love for B-grade horror flicks, (the aforementioned) 13 Floor Elevators, Velvet Undergound, Kim Fowley and (blech!) The Doors—was concocting a mash of home-recorded punk, pop and psychedelia for a few fortunate ears. This isn’t the Sunset Strip or Lower East Side, folks, it’s Grove City, Ohio, a scene ruled by codeine, cannabis and Carling. So be prepared to hunker down with a fuzzy, furry and fried collection of 20-plus years of sound from the vaults of one of America’s most important legends in the flesh. The Creeping Flesh, that is.
Thanks to Mark Lux for the video tape. Thanks to Adam for the song titles.

Girls Against Boys – Khyber Philadelphia 5-14-92

Girls Against Boys from the Khyber in 1992. It is mostly stuff from their first 2 releases Nineties vs Eighties & Tropic of Scorpio plus my favorite Venus Luxure No.1 Baby. They played the Khyber pretty regularly so I’m not sure this is the right flyer. I as usual could not come up with all the song titles if anyone can fill in the titles for the first two songs please add a comment.

A little info on them: The group began as a side project of Eli Janney and Fugazi drummer Brendan Canty. Canty left the project by 1990 due to his commitments with Fugazi. Janney went on to recruit three former members of D.C. hardcore punk group Soulside—Scott McCloud, Johnny Temple, and Alexis Fleisig—to complete the line-up.[1] Girls Against Boys are perhaps most notable for employing dual bass guitars, a rarity in rock music, and for their second album, Venus Luxure No.1 Baby, a heavy yet nuanced entry into early 1990s post-hardcore.

Guided By Voices – Khyber 08/07/1993 Siltbreeze Show

Video from the first Guided By Voices show in Philadelphia. It was a Siltbreeze night at the Khyber with Temple of Bon Matin, Strapping Field Hands, Mike Rep, GBV and headlining was V3. I’ll put up the video from the other bands as I get it done. GBV along with Pavement where the two bands from the early 90’s that I thought had a really unique sound that I was really into.
From Wikipedia – New York City and Philadelphia were host to Guided by Voices’ return to the live stage (and first shows outside of Ohio) in 1993. At this time, the always-fluid Guided by Voices lineup coalesced around the core of Pollard, guitarists Tobin Sprout and Mitch Mitchell (not to be confused with Jimi Hendrix’s drummer), bassist Dan Toohey, and drummer Kevin Fennell. Sprout, who was briefly featured in an early-’80s
version of the band, had re-joined circa Propeller and soon became Pollard’s primary musical foil, in addition to contributing several of his own songs to the band’s catalog.

The video was shot by Rich – Thanks to Mark Lux for the tape.

Television Personalities – Khyber 4-9-1992

I saw that Dan Treacy who basically is the Television Personalities was in a coma see the article I remembered I had a live tape of them from the Khyber. I haven’t been able to find any updates on his health but hopefully Dan will pull through. I think the tape is from April 9th 1992 but I’m not sure. According to Dan Treacy’s web site Mad Scene opened up for them that night and I also have a live tape of Mad Scene from the Khyber.
For all things Television Personalities check out A Day in Heaven site.

Rocknoceros

This is the second band that I have been sent music by a member to put up on this blog. Which I am very happy to do so if any other Philly bands want to be on email me. Here is the info on Rocknoceros.
The band:
Deb – Vocals, is now an artist in St. Louis
Rachel – Backing vocals, is now an artist in Australia
Chris – Drums and backing vocals, is now an artist in NYC and was in The Hunks and Scarpetta after he moved to NYC.
Dan – Guitar, also played in Double Penetration, Cactus Love, The Sinners, and The Illegitimate Sons and Daughters
Tom – Guitar & Bass, also played in Jack Lord’s Hair and Mud Pie and now plays in Mud Pie Sun
Let’s see..there was the story of our tape being mastered. We had recorded it in Tom’s west Phillly basement on a 4 track and sent it to Valley Forge Music for mastering and reproduction. When we didn’t like the dolby they put on it, the president of the company decided he would master it himself. He took one listen and sent the tape back to us saying it was obscene and that he did not want our business! He refused to reproduce it! We were banned!

Tom came to me one day and said “wanna be in a band? i want to put a band together that’s like the punk version of Kiss”. So we always dressed up in crazy outfits. Tom had some sort of lion suit (or something like that!). We played a lot of parties (Funk Dungeon, Rodman St. block party etc…) When we played at Khyber the 1st time, Debbie Katon (our singer) wore this home made bullet bra contraption, like the one Madonna made famous but it was before Madonna did it!
We played at the Fairmount Prison Block party. Mega Jimmy drove us there and when we got there it was full of kids and grandmas and family types. We convinced Deb that we should still play. At one point, a tween girl came up to the stage and yelled at us “CAN YOU TURN DOWN, YOU’RE GIVING EVERYONE A HEADACHE!” There was one teenage boy that loved us though, so it was worth it.

Not much else to say. It was my favorite band that I’ve been in and a lot of fun. I still think that the songs were good. – From Dan

Deb and Chris were art students at PCA so they might have gotten class credit for making Rocknoceros outfits. I remember going to a theatrical costume shop in Philly that had these sales where you could fill a bag with old costumes for five dollars. Dan found a sort of colonial minuteman coat, and I found a leopard suit with the ass torn out and some red lamé fabric that I made pants out of. And I spray painted a pair of platform shoes bright yellow that I nearly broke an ankle on. Chris dressed in total whacked-out drag and even somehow made huge and scary strap-on female genitalia that looked hilarious when he sat down at the drums and hiked up his skirt. – From Tom
