Big Black @ the Crypt 10-30-85

This video is painful for me I was at this show but left before Big Black went on. I was a freshman in college and had an early class the next morning. The worst part which I couldn’t have known then was I would later change my major and leave Drexel for the much cheaper Temple ( I could have gone anywhere but Temple is a hell of allot cheaper). I don’t even remember what class it was so it couldn’t have been very important. It was a packed show which for the Crypt (a basement in a West Philly row house) was not hard to do. So the video is basically all one static shot of Steve Albini and Santiago Durango. What more do you need a close-up of the drum machine?. It show was October 30th 1985 so there’s some songs from Atomizer but it was before the album was released. The video (I believe) was shot by ex-KDU DJ Jeff Jenkins. Thanks to Pete for giving me a copy of this – check out his site Sounds of Tomorrow

Legitimate Reason

This is Legitimate Reason Philly band from mid-80s. Their sound was influenced by DC/Dischord but they were very much a Philly Hardcore band. Although around only a short time they seemed to play a lot of shows (some flyers in the slideshow below) the members of the band seemed to be at every show, party, etc. Dan & Jon were also later in Stepping Razo. Dan is currently? in The Mojo Machine. If I get more info on what the former members of this band did after or are doing currently I’ll update the post. Included in this post is their 7″ on Plus Records (Recorded at Inner Ear) and their demo tape which include a cover of Let it Be and the last untitled thing is not really a song just something that was on the end of the tape. Also check out the LoudFast Philly interview with John Finn

Doomed To Obscurity (DTO) @ the Tritone

This video was shot at the last Doomed To Obscurity (DTO) (of this lineup) show which was at the Tritone. To me DTO had a sound that was kind of a mix of old Hardcore and Garage rock. Probably because of the influences of all the past local bands the members were in. DTO is made up of Roger Bodine (Grisly Fiction, Underraga, Suktub, Heroics) – Bass  /  Chris Hunter (Red Paint People, Mothra) – Guitar  /  Jason Clouser (Kitschchao) – Guitar  /  Jason Ranck – drums  /  Billy Taz (Mama Volume, Angus Kahn) -Vocals (2005-present) / Tristan Egolf – Vocals (2002-2004) At the bottom of the videos I put a video for the song Better Days with animation by Judith Schaechter which is my favorite song from the lineup with Tristan. He was also the singer for Kitschchao and an author – sadly he died in 2005. Below the videos I made mp3’s of the audio from the video if you want them.

Strapping Field Hands Live 93 & 94

Two live shows from the Strapping Field Hands from 93 and 94. The 93 show was opening for Alastair Galbraith and Peter Jefferies’ first tour of America. (I’m going to put up their part of the show soon) I actually had to tape over part of Strapping because I filled up both 90 minute cassettes and Peter Jefferies was still playing. The second show from 94 they were opening for Guided By Voices – both shows were packed shows at the Khyber (which means you couldn’t physically fit another person through the door.) Strapping Field Hands were probably the biggest band in Philly during those years and always opened for everyone really interesting coming to Philly. They have reformed and you can check out what’s going on with them at
Here’s an interview with Bob from Strapping on the Nice Popper zine site.

A couple of the songs I wasn’t sure of the titles if someone lets me know what the titles are I’ll update the post.

Tons of Nuns

Tons of Nuns was originally a three piece band with Bern (The Julia Set), Art (later of Photon Band, Uptown Bones, Lilys, etc.) and Brian (Bad Ronald, Rear Admiral, Mad Bomber ) To check out this version of the band see the Live from WXPN tracks below. (i wasn’t sure of if I got all the names of the songs right please send me any corrections if their is a mistake) After Art left Bill Rude (the Koosmans, Bad Ronald, Rotgut, Stinkbomben, Rear Admiral) and Dan Levin (Sadly he died in a car accident July 4, 1991) joined the band . They recorded a demo which I called the 3rd demo tape (see below.)  One track from the demo “What’s it Gonna Be” was on the Rave Records’ Discpan Hands: A Philadelphia Compilation which is still available on itunes and amazon.

Fugazi – WKDU Band Bash March 2nd 1991

These videos are from the second time Fugazi played a WKDU show at Drexel. I shot a few videos with my Pixel camcorder from tthe side of the stage. I was hoping to move around but the show was very crowded. So all the pixel video are from the side of the stage with Guy and Joe on it. I have no idea what the order of the songs was but this is all I had. The other video was by another KDU guy Ken and was with real cameras so the quality is a lot better (for DUTV). Fugazi always put on a great show but this one was not as crazy as the first KDU one that was at the Drexel parking garage I don’t seem to have a flyer for this show but I took a few screenshots.
All these videos are up on the freedom has no bounds You Tube channel. On that channel I’ve started to collect some Philly bands and shows from Philly in the favorties section.
The full audio for this show is available in the Fugazi Live Series

Kitschchao, Temple of Bon Matin & Underagga -WKDU Band Bash

Seven videos I shot with a pixelvision kids camcorder from a WKDU Band Bash with Kitschchao, Temple of Bon Matin and Underagga.
I only made a few videos with this camera (I’ll put up the Fugazi ones later) but for those who aren’t familiar with it Fisher Price put this out as a camcorder for kids. It recorded the video (and audio) on regular cassette tapes (about 5 minutes on each side of a 90 minute audio tape) The results were a very artsy grainy black n white. These tapes were kind of old when I finally figured out how to get them first on a regular video tape and then digitalize later. More on Pixel Camcorder
As for the bands I could only identify one song which was Kitchchao covering Riverbottom Nightmare Band from Emmet Otter’s Jug-band Christmas. So if anyone can identify any of the other songs let me know and I’ll update them. (Correction- 2nd Kitschao is White Boy and 3rd is Just Like Always / The Message – Thanks Dave) The flyer for the show June 12th so I’m guessing this was probably 1993.

Homo Picnic- Days Of Grey LP

Homo Picnic headlined the very first hardcore show I went to in Bethlehem PA. I bought their T-shirt but didn’t see them since my friend who drove had a junior license and we had to be home by midnight.
After I moved to Philly I made up for it by seeing them allot.
Besides seeing then at their shows you could usually see members of the band at all the other shows or by the keg at parties. I believe Days of Grey was their only full album.

UPDATE The song I didn’t know the title which is on the track with Gone Away is Continuous Dogs which was only ever studio recorded for a session they did in Seattle for a radio show. Thanks to Counting Cracks for the info.

Scram

Update – Uranium Rush Records has re-released Scram’s 2 albums both streaming and on vinyl – see the  bandcamp links below =>

As I mentioned in my Electric Love Muffin post I don’t see anyway that I could ever see a band now as many times as I went to Scram and ELM shows. It seemed like Scram was on the bill for every all ages show in the mid to late-80’s. However, they didn’t just play all ages show they seemed to play every club in the city. One of the strangest (but amazing) shows was seeing them back up Schooly D at the Chestnut Cabaret. (Which might have been the first hip hop tours with a live backing bands- I’m not sure)
The things I’ve collected below are an early in studio recording from WXPN, their first album Stand Up and then Kingsessing Trials. The first two were Scram as a three piece with a heavy Reggae influence. By Kingsessing Trials they had added horns and additional musicians (I would put their names but I don’t actually have the cd case anymore.) Trails at times reminds me of Paul Weller’s Style Council. Also I put up some flyers at the bottom of the post. So, enjoy.
Also check out the Loud Fast Philly interview with Matt & Greg Mungan

This is a booklet that I believe came with the Scram Demo tape. If I can find a copy of the demo tape I will add the music files to this later.
