Television Personalities – Khyber 4-9-1992

I saw that Dan Treacy who basically is the Television Personalities was in a coma see the article I remembered I had a live tape of them from the Khyber. I haven’t been able to find any updates on his health but hopefully Dan will pull through. I think the tape is from April 9th 1992 but I’m not sure. According to Dan Treacy’s web site Mad Scene opened up for them that night and I also have a live tape of Mad Scene from the Khyber.
For all things Television Personalities check out A Day in Heaven site.

Rocknoceros

This is the second band that I have been sent music by a member to put up on this blog. Which I am very happy to do so if any other Philly bands want to be on email me. Here is the info on Rocknoceros.
The band:
Deb – Vocals, is now an artist in St. Louis
Rachel – Backing vocals, is now an artist in Australia
Chris – Drums and backing vocals, is now an artist in NYC and was in The Hunks and Scarpetta after he moved to NYC.
Dan – Guitar, also played in Double Penetration, Cactus Love, The Sinners, and The Illegitimate Sons and Daughters
Tom – Guitar & Bass, also played in Jack Lord’s Hair and Mud Pie and now plays in Mud Pie Sun
Let’s see..there was the story of our tape being mastered. We had recorded it in Tom’s west Phillly basement on a 4 track and sent it to Valley Forge Music for mastering and reproduction. When we didn’t like the dolby they put on it, the president of the company decided he would master it himself. He took one listen and sent the tape back to us saying it was obscene and that he did not want our business! He refused to reproduce it! We were banned!

Tom came to me one day and said “wanna be in a band? i want to put a band together that’s like the punk version of Kiss”. So we always dressed up in crazy outfits. Tom had some sort of lion suit (or something like that!). We played a lot of parties (Funk Dungeon, Rodman St. block party etc…) When we played at Khyber the 1st time, Debbie Katon (our singer) wore this home made bullet bra contraption, like the one Madonna made famous but it was before Madonna did it!
We played at the Fairmount Prison Block party. Mega Jimmy drove us there and when we got there it was full of kids and grandmas and family types. We convinced Deb that we should still play. At one point, a tween girl came up to the stage and yelled at us “CAN YOU TURN DOWN, YOU’RE GIVING EVERYONE A HEADACHE!” There was one teenage boy that loved us though, so it was worth it.

Not much else to say. It was my favorite band that I’ve been in and a lot of fun. I still think that the songs were good. – From Dan

Deb and Chris were art students at PCA so they might have gotten class credit for making Rocknoceros outfits. I remember going to a theatrical costume shop in Philly that had these sales where you could fill a bag with old costumes for five dollars. Dan found a sort of colonial minuteman coat, and I found a leopard suit with the ass torn out and some red lamé fabric that I made pants out of. And I spray painted a pair of platform shoes bright yellow that I nearly broke an ankle on. Chris dressed in total whacked-out drag and even somehow made huge and scary strap-on female genitalia that looked hilarious when he sat down at the drums and hiked up his skirt. – From Tom

Mothra

Mothra easily had the best costumes and 7″ and cd packaging of any Philly bands. Often those kind of things have been used to make up for lets say a lack of talent. But not in the case of Mothra – they had the kitsch of Urge Overkill but musically with more of a 70’s hard rock thing rather than lounge sound. Starting as a three piece with Dan on guitar, Neil on bass & vocals and Rob (Beretta 76, Creem Circus, Blue Train, Rockula, Stinkbomben). Then later adding Chris Hunter (Red Paint People DTO) as a second guitarist.

More Fiends

More Fiends sound is hard to describe. Here’s an attempt to describe them from the Sounds magazine (London):
An explosion of vivid colours both in looks and personalities, More Fiends prove to be illuminating musically too. With superfuzz thrash, disoriented voodoo rhythm and gloriously camp vocal extremities, they have come up with one far out wild party. The powerful effect of the Fiends’ multi-ingredient homebrew is a drug free buzz for quality kitsch lovers everywhere.
I know for me they expanded my musical horizons further than just the faster & louder hardcore that dominated the 80’s all ages scene (not that I didn’t like that as well)

To me they are one of the Philadelphia bands most in tune with the true spirit of punk. The idea of early Punk was bands setting out to be their own weird thing. More Fiends achieve that – they sound like no one else and you couldn’t pigeon hole them into some category (i.e. hardcore, crossover, emo & all the ridiculous labels that exist today.)

The core of the band was Elizabeth and Allen Fiend plus many other people over the years. Here are at least some of the other members: Ron Fiend, Rich Poor (Total Fucking Destruction, Brutal Truth). Bob Bludgeon, Julie, Tony, Dave Fiend (Kitschchao) & Bob Fiend.
Elizabeth for some time now has been making the amazing tv show BiG TeA PaRtY
BiG TeA PaRtY is about a funky, elegant, healthy and ecological lifestyle. Use our web site, videos, articles, recipes, projects and photos to inspire your transformation to a happier, livelier existence. Click to read our Mission.
Below I have 3 cd’s worth of More Fiends. Music From Big Tea Party (the musical backdrop to the show. – some of which I believe is solo Allen stuff), Dark Side Of Genius (Like an explosion through a maze of sound with jagged schizophrenic convulsions. The weirdest of all More Fiends music. Demented and abrasive lo-fi basement recordings. Your Mother won’t like this one! – Mostly the later Dave & Bob Fiend era) and Nibble (live recording mostly from 1992/1993 see the notes below the tracks for info on who was in the band and where it was from.) Below that I’ve collected a bunch of flyers for your viewing pleasure.

Seam – Khyber 6/25/92

Seam bio from Touch & Go site: Seam began as a three-piece in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Although Seam’s “pedigree” included Bitch Magnet and Superchunk, Seam’s reticent melodicism and subtly moving guitar washes occupy a realm quite different than the illustrious pasts of Seam’s members might suggest. Seam released their first single Days of Thunder on Homestead Records in October of 1990, and their second single Granny 9X on Merge Records in early ’92. The band released their first full-length, Headsparks, on Homestead in 1992. After a move to Chicago, Seam also moved to Touch and Go for the release of an EP and three full-length albums, the last being The Pace Is Glacial in 1998.
This is a live set from the Khyber from June 25th 1992. They were the headliner with CakeKitchen opening up for them. A couple of tracks from Kernal but mostly from Headsparks and the early 7″s. For more on Seam go to the Touch & Go Site. Also, check out Sooyoung Park’s current band Ee at Facebook

CakeKitchen – Khyber 6/25/92

Cakekitchen

CakeKitchen is Graeme Jefferies with various other musicians. Graeme had been in Nocturnal Projections and This Kind of Punishment with his brother Peter Jefferies. I’m not 100% sure but judging by the time frame it was probably Graeme with bassist Rachael King and drummer Robert Key. This show was on June 25, 1992 at the Khyber opening for Seam. Lots of tracks off the World of Sand album and the earlier Time Flowing Backwards album. Greame is still putting out releases – the latest is Kangaroos In My Top Paddock. For more on Cakekitchen (including buying cd’s directly from the band) check out the Cakekitchen Facebook Page.
