Caterpillar was one of my favorite local bands in the 90s – I was hooked after hearing the title track off the Bus 6 7 inch. This is a demo tape without a lot of info on it but I assume it was before that 7inch and the previous one Velvet Ears.
The lineup of the band was:
Bass – Brenda DeFeo
Drums – Jack McInerney
Guitar – Dennis Davis
Guitar, Vocals – Mike Lenert
Mike Lenart also currently plays in Suffacox Mach 2 & was Lettuce Prey

Thanks for the tape Marina.
The Eddie Beinlich tapes. Eddie thinks the LMNOP (who later became Doctor Bombay) tape is from their first ever practice. The Deliriants practice is one of their early ones probably before they played any shows and even decided on a band name. The Bill + Mark tape is a mystery. Eddie cannot remember why he has it and doesn’t play on it as far as he remembers. It’s on the a-side of the Deliriants practice tape and I think it is really good.

The Jean-Paul Sartre Experience, later renamed JPS Experience after a lawsuit by the estate of Jean-Paul Sartre, were part of the 2nd wave of New Zealand’s Flying Nun Records Bands. I first heard them through their song Flex which was on the I’m In Love with These Times compilation and video comp. It was unlike any of the other bands on that and really stood out. They had a wide variety of sounds over their 3 albums and many eps. Most (maybe all?) is collected in I Like Rain: The Story Of The Jean-Paul Sartre Experience
My tape has no information on it but I believe this show was at JC Dobbs – part of the Noisyland tour with The Bats and Straitjacket Fits on July 27, 1993.

For a description I’m going to steal an article by Neil Gladstone (I assume from City Paper) It is a dark and breezy summer night around 4 am.
You’re driving in a pick-up truck somewhere in Ohio or maybe its Indiana already you’re not sure because the empty road you’re on has more convenience stores than highway signs. The tape you’re listening to is Kavune’s new ep, Sobaka. Your friend who recommended it sleeps in the passenger seat. The ticking of the hi-hat seems to fall in step with the steady pistons and the melody lines hum through the warm dashboard.Your eyes strain to stay in focus and you can feel adrenalin ebb and flow in your neck. The rhythm guitar in “Sat.”buzzes, chops and strums like roughshot Rolling Stones outtake. The voice is intimate and resigned. A raspy lead calls to mind the psychedelic, country riffs of the Byrds and Roky Erickson. “Shep Song” and “Venera” wash bleary memories and nightmares out of your head and into the rear view mirror. Kavune’s band members live in Philly and New York for most of the year, but often return to Ukraine, their parent’s homeland. That culture’s influence is undeniable. Kavune means “watermelon” in Ukrainian. The band often covers traditional folk songs and sings occasionally in the Eastern European language.

This was still when Carlos Bravo played bass for us. And he sings the first song while our studio producer Trevor Bajus plays guitar and I (Marko) play (!) sax for that song. On the last song, the ‘vkakuvstavtsi’ chorus (the ‘stepped in shit’ chorus) seems to feature Mark Halaway, among others.

No 2 Nippy’s Demo Tape & 7 inch Delicious from 1994. Mid 90’s Philly band that that I saw many times including when they opened up for Bikini Kill at a KDU band bash. The band was Kristin Hurst (drums), Jill Macdowell (guitars & vocals) & Tammy Bonn (Vocals & Bass). The side A song One lil’ Dukie reminds me of one of my favorite bands of that time Babes in Toyland. Tiny Thumbs is more of a noisy pop song with the 2nd song going back towards the style of the side A song.

crankcase. machine 1 was 1992 – 1995.
rob coye guitars and vocals
marc beck guitar and vocals
rick wright bass and vocals
chuck hanning drums drums and more drums
(the unit continued for a few years with Erwin Michelfelder (of Clabbers fronted Mezmorons’ replacing Marc)
Crankcase hits that spot between SY and fLIPS while sitting alongside Silkworm and Rodan.
the band initially started after a few jam sessions with the trio of Rob Coye, Marc Beck and a pre-Strapping Field Hands Jeff Werner. we had all been friends in our previous bands: Rob’s Grisly Fiction and Marc and Jeff’s Confusion Visits. incidentally, Marc and Jeff’s Vick Logic started at the same exact time
it was apparent that Rob and Marc could display some decent early 90s guitar histrionics, and we decided to become real by adding Grisly Fiction’s first drummer Chuck Hanning along with party companion Rick Wright
we played pretty actively in Philadelphia. notable billings were with US Maple and Babe the Blue Ox and one rousing show at Pi Lam’s Human BBQ with A Place to Bury Strangers
Rick remains active with Phila psych giants Flower Girl (please see their Bandcamp)
Rob Coye did a Grisly Fiction reunion project with gigs and continues playing noise with his Phantom Pilots project as well as instrumental duo Lame Cover Band (2008-forever) and a stints with Steven Cerio’s Small Girl Boils Water (early 2000’s) .
Marc remains retired from musical creativity after projects revelogic and (the) heroics
Chuck enjoys home brewing and jazz combo
please listen to this LOUD. play it LOUD . LOUD. LOUD!!!!
