Articles Of Faith – Live Videos

Live @ Elk’s Lodge Atlantic City

Articles of Faith Live video from the Elk’s Lodge in Atlantic City on July 26, 1985. They headlined the show with Die Kreuzen and Electric Love Muffin opening. Wide range of songs from Up Against the Wall from the Peace Comp through Give Thanks and In This Life. I would guess this is probably there last tour since they broke up in 85. Articles of Faith are one of my favorite Chicago bands. Musically they had a unique sound and the lyrics were always great both the political stuff and they more personal In This Life lyrics. Hard to say because In This Life didn’t actually get released until 86 (two years after it was recorded) but I bet that album was a big influence on DC Revolution Summer bands like Rites Of Spring & Grey Matter. They recently got back together for a show at the Riot festival in Chicago. There is some video of the reunion on Youtube or on the I have A Brain in My Ass Blog. They also released a 7″ of new songs called New Normal Catastrophe which you can get here Plus Alternative Tentacles put out 2 collection cd’s which pretty much includes everything they recorded. There page on the Alternative Tentacles site is here (then select AOF from the dropdown)
Thanks again to Pete at Sounds of Tomorrow for the beta tapes and Crunch Productions for the amazing shows.

Trained Attack Dogs – Live @ Chaos Records

Trained Attack Dogs started in 1986 and released one 7 inch (Pizza EP), one track on the Discpan Hands Comp and a self released live tape (Lotsa Fun). You can listen to all of it by going to www.kenkramar.com The band included Keith Souder (vocals), Ken Kramar (guitar) and John Manhardt (bass) and various drummers plus David Thrower also played guitar with them in 1988 and 1989. The drummer on these videos from Chaos Records was Rich Hoak (later of Brutal Truth and currently TFD.) I’ve been told this was one of his first shows with them. I’m not sure what everyone in the band is doing currently but Keith is djing as DJ K.L.Diablo. They played a bunch of shows in the last few years but I’m not sure if they are still back together as of now. Below the videos there is audio files and a slide show of all the flyers I could find of Trained AttacK Dogs.

Electric Love Muffin – Live @ CEC

The Muffin live from the CEC in West Philly – A rock against hunger show with Constraint (From Leigh Valley) and Government Issue. This is the last video I have of them – As usual they put on a great show. Some time I will try to get the Constraint and GI video from this show up as well. I’m not sure I have anything else to say about Electric love Muffin since this is my third post on them. I did get asked if I had any video or audio of their cover of Highway Star and I think they started doing that after all the videos I have so if anyone has any more video or live audio please let me know.
Again there are a couple of songs I remember but I couldn’t figure out the titles. So, if anyone knows please let me know in the comments. Thanks

Decontrol – Live @ CEC in West Philly

Decontrol was born in 1980, started as a two-man hardcore outfit by Adam Avery. Adam played a combination guitar / bass along with a bass drum over original singer Zero’s caterwalling vocals. It was horrible, but soon became 100% better when Adam fired the other half of Decontrol and recruited the amazing skills of Ritchie Birch on guitar and Keith Lenderman on drums. Adam settled on bass and vocals. (stolen from their website)
These videos are from the CEC in West Philly I’m guessing from 84 or 85. Most of the songs from their album Songs from the Gut are here which by the way you can buy (along with lots of extra tracks) at cdbaby. Another Philly band that should be up there with all the legendary hardcore bands from the rest of the county. It’s amazing how a little thing like starting songs off with A-B-C-D instead of 1-2-3-4 can stand out so much but I’ve never heard another band do it and I will always identify it with Decontrol. The good news is if you missed them they are back together and working on a new album. I have to admit I have not seen them since the 80’s but I plan to make up for that next time they play a show in Philly. I have more Decontrol video I will try to get up at some point one is a show from AC opening for Toxic Reasons and the other is opening for Scream at the West Side Club.
If your on Facebook go to their page and “like” Below the videos are the audio tracks and a slide show of Decontrol flyers. As usual there were a couple of songs I wasn’t sure of the titles but hopefully someone will fill me in on it and I’ll update the post.

Ken @ the Fire

Videos from a Ken show at the Fire on March 20th 2010. My best guess is Ken has been around now for over 15 years. Going through many different singers and drummers in the early days until the current lineup that has been together for at least 10 years now. They released one 7″ and two cd’s (you should buy them here) Ken doesn’t play out much these days but when they do it’s worth the wait. I’m not very good at describing music and I can’t think of another band that Ken sounds like so just check it out. Also go to the I Like Ken Website. (I tried to fix the audio on the videos but it’s still a little crackly. My flip style video camera I discovered does not have a volume control and it recorded a little too loud.) I also included a video for the song “Happy Suicide” directed by Paul Hazlett and the audio files are below all the videos.

O Mighty Isis

O Mighty Isis exemplified everything that was good in the early 90’s indie rock scene. Catchy guitar riffs, fun lyrics, alternating tempos between slow & fast, and unusual cover songs. There shows were always a good time and it was always cool to see what new guitars Chris came up with for the shows. I really believe that if Philadelphia had a big indie label like K or Teanbeat – O Mighty Isis would be revered in the same way as bands like Beat Happening, Unrest and Mecca Normal. Included below is their cd Angel Brite and a cd comp which includes their 7 inch. Sophy and/or Chris went on to have numerous bands after O Mighty Isis with a variety of styles: Including Wastoid (British Metal), Slobber Mountain Boys, Illegitimate Sons and Daughters,The Pine Barons (Blue Grass) Also La Resistance. Chris now playing guitar and vocals for  Creem Circus which has covered a few Mighty Isis tunes among the Glam.
Any guitar or bass players that read this should go check out Chris’ shop Dipinto Guitars

Sadistic Exploits – Video from Abe’s

Video of a Sadistic Exploits show at Abe’s (I think.) The flyer has the same date as the video so I am assuming that this show was at Abe’s Steaks. It looks like it could be Abe’s I’m just not 100% sure. Sadistic Exploits is one of the Philly bands I really regret not being in Philly while they were around. I always loved the Freedom/Apathy 7″ and recently got that and more from Noise Addiction. From everything I’ve heard and you can see glimpses of in the video they were a great band that was also really supportive of other bands and the scene in general. Noise Addiction also has a couple pdf’s of some zines the band put out – click here for a link to the zines. Thanks to Bryan for filling me in on the song titles.

Scab Cadillac – White Trash Menthol 100’s 7″

My favorite Philly band of the late 80’s and I guess into the early 90’s (I’m not sure when they broke up) Scab Cadillac was Doug Bhen-Nyet (formally of Homo Picnic and Kremlin Korps) on guitar, Paul Hazlet (formally of Blue) on drums, Bob Dickie (from lots of bands including King of Siam, Sparrow Steeple and the Reformed Strapping Field Hands also see my post on them) on bass and Jack Gorry singing. They released this single White Trash Menthol 100 plus an album Tagged and Numbered which is still available from Rave at least to download. I assume if you download that album you don’t get all the artwork, inset and lyrics so I put that together here if you want it
If you look at the flyers below you can see they played at probably every place in Philly at the time. I was listening to the 7″ again as I was recording it and the song Pious Hatred about the religious right seems just as applicable today as back in the 80’s. Maybe it’s because he also was a big guy but Jack’s singing always reminded me of Gary Floyd from the Dicks. The first time I remember seeing Jack was at a show at Pi Lam (I’m not sure who maybe Youth of Today?) as he was drunkenly rampaging through the pit and then fell asleep on the stage. Soon after I starting see Jack all the time; guarding the keg at parties or holding down everyone’s sofas. Jack was a great guy he always seemed really happy to see you and really seemed to care about how you were doing or what you were saying. Sadly Jack passed away while working at a hot spring/spiritual healing community in Northern California. I remember there was a tape of music he had made while he was in California but unfortunately I don’t have it. If anyone does please let me know I’d love to put it up. Here is an interview from a KDU communique

Ruin from St Mary’s in West Philly January 25 1986

Video from a Ruin show at St. Mary’s on Jan. 25th 1986. Another one of the transfers off of Pete at Drugmusic.com’s old Beta Tapes. Hopefully this video will further show why Ruin was the best Philly band ever. It has a good mix of songs from He-Ho and Fiat Lux plus a few that were not on either album. I tried to clear up the video as much as I could I’m not sure if the reddish-pinkish color is from a red stage light or something that happens to old video tapes.
St Mary’s was a church on Penn’s campus in West Philly so every show there meant a before and/or after trip to Troy’s for some underage drinking and an Eggel. (see number 5) I was by there recently and the spot where Troy’s was is still empty.
All of these old tapes seem to have it. For more Ruin info check out: Ruin’s web page or facebook

Alastair Galbraith & Peter Jefferies Live Khyber – Philadelphia 08/19/93

Alastair Galbraith & Peter Jefferies from (I believe) their first tour of America. This was recorded in the audience at the Khyber on 8/19/93. I tired to figure out all of the titles but both of them were in a lot of bands and other projects so I couldn’t get them all. If anyone can fill the titles in please let me know. I was and still am a big fan of New Zealand music and they were in some of the best bands like Nocturnal Projections, Plagal Grind, A Handful of Dust, The Rip, This Kind of Punishment and all of their solo albums and projects. I skipped going on a vacation road trip because this show was happening while I was supposed to be on vacation. The show turned out to be worth missing the trip. If you want to check out more this is Alastair Galbraith on Siltbreeze’s site and Peter Jefferies’ site
Also here is a pdf of an interview with Peter Jefferies from a New Zealand zine Alley Oop
