O Mighty Isis

O Mighty Isis exemplified everything that was good in the early 90’s indie rock scene. Catchy guitar riffs, fun lyrics, alternating tempos between slow & fast, and unusual cover songs. There shows were always a good time and it was always cool to see what new guitars Chris came up with for the shows. I really believe that if Philadelphia had a big indie label like K or Teanbeat – O Mighty Isis would be revered in the same way as bands like Beat Happening, Unrest and Mecca Normal. Included below is their cd Angel Brite and a cd comp which includes their 7 inch. Sophy and/or Chris went on to have numerous bands after O Mighty Isis with a variety of styles: Including Wastoid (British Metal), Slobber Mountain Boys, Illegitimate Sons and Daughters,The Pine Barons (Blue Grass) Also La Resistance. Chris now playing guitar and vocals for Creem Circus which has covered a few Mighty Isis tunes among the Glam.

Sadistic Exploits – Video from Abe’s

Video of a Sadistic Exploits show at Abe’s (I think.) The flyer has the same date as the video so I am assuming that this show was at Abe’s Steaks. It looks like it could be Abe’s I’m just not 100% sure. Sadistic Exploits is one of the Philly bands I really regret not being in Philly while they were around. I always loved the Freedom/Apathy 7″ and recently got that and more from Noise Addiction. From everything I’ve heard and you can see glimpses of in the video they were a great band that was also really supportive of other bands and the scene in general. Scab Cadillac – White Trash Menthol 100’s 7″

My favorite Philly band of the late 80’s and I guess into the early 90’s (I’m not sure when they broke up) Scab Cadillac was Doug Bhen-Nyet (formally of Homo Picnic and Kremlin Korps) on guitar, Paul Hazlet (formally of Blue) on drums, Bob Dickie (from lots of bands including King of Siam, Sparrow Steeple and the Reformed Strapping Field Hands also see my post on them) on bass and Jack Gorry singing. They released this single White Trash Menthol 100 plus an album Tagged and Numbered which is still available from Rave at least to download. I assume if you download that album you don’t get all the artwork, inset and lyrics so I put that together here if you want it
If you look at the flyers below you can see they played at probably every place in Philly at the time. I was listening to the 7″ again as I was recording it and the song Pious Hatred about the religious right seems just as applicable today as back in the 80’s. Maybe it’s because he also was a big guy but Jack’s singing always reminded me of Gary Floyd from the Dicks. The first time I remember seeing Jack was at a show at Pi Lam (I’m not sure who maybe Youth of Today?) as he was drunkenly rampaging through the pit and then fell asleep on the stage. Soon after I starting see Jack all the time; guarding the keg at parties or holding down everyone’s sofas. Jack was a great guy he always seemed really happy to see you and really seemed to care about how you were doing or what you were saying. Sadly Jack passed away while working at a hot spring/spiritual healing community in Northern California. I remember there was a tape of music he had made while he was in California but unfortunately I don’t have it. If anyone does please let me know I’d love to put it up. Ruin from St Mary’s in West Philly January 25 1986

Video from a Ruin show at St. Mary’s on Jan. 25th 1986. Another one of the transfers off of Pete at Drugmusic.com’s old Beta Tapes. Hopefully this video will further show why Ruin was the best Philly band ever. It has a good mix of songs from He-Ho and Fiat Lux plus a few that were not on either album. I tried to clear up the video as much as I could I’m not sure if the reddish-pinkish color is from a red stage light or something that happens to old video tapes.
St Mary’s was a church on Penn’s campus in West Philly so every show there meant a before and/or after trip to Troy’s for some underage drinking and an Eggel. (see number 5) I was by there recently and the spot where Troy’s was is still empty.

Alastair Galbraith & Peter Jefferies at the Khyber

Alastair Galbraith & Peter Jefferies Live Khyber – Philadelphia 08/19/93

Alastair Galbraith & Peter Jefferies from (I believe) their first tour of America. This was recorded in the audience at the Khyber on 8/19/93. I tired to figure out all of the titles but both of them were in a lot of bands and other projects so I couldn’t get them all. If anyone can fill the titles in please let me know. I was and still am a big fan of New Zealand music and they were in some of the best bands like Nocturnal Projections, Plagal Grind, A Handful of Dust, The Rip, This Kind of Punishment and all of their solo albums and projects. I skipped going on a vacation road trip because this show was happening while I was supposed to be on vacation. The show turned out to be worth missing the trip. Electric Love Muffin – Elk’s Lodge AC 7/26/85

Video from an Electric Love Muffin show at the Elk’s Lodge in Atlantic City. The show was on July 26, 1985 and they were opening for Die Kreuzen and Articles of Faith. I was never at any of the Atlantic City shows but from what I’ve heard (and now watched) it looked like a good venue. Lenny and Crunch Productions always put on good shows. This video is from a bunch of videos I borrowed and converted from Betamax tapes from Pete at Sounds of Tomorrow So keep in mind this video was captured from a 25 year old Beta tape. I’m not sure if it the tape or the camera at the time put Rich gets kind of washed out when he is in the spotlight. Hopefully I got the song titles right besides their normal cover of Norwegian Wood – during a string break on Butch’s guitar they do Bad Moon Rising and the Who’s I don’t Mind. I’m not sure what the last song is it sounds familiar but I can’t figure it out. Also, here is an old zine article about touring with the Muffin from Free TNT zine

Serial Killers – demo tape

Before White Zombie and GWAR when Marilyn Manson was just that weird goth kid smoking cloves outside his high school there was the Serial Killers (ok, I’m not sure all of that is true but I thought it sounded good) Live they were kind of like a slasher movie musical. Maybe the special effects were not Tom Savini quality but it was a good show. Once again I don’t have the cover for this demo so I’m not sure about what the line up was on it. The first three songs (two are on the same file) were also on the album (not sure if the recordings are different); Snake Pit and the cover of Iron Man I don’t believe were released anywhere else. The last song Abdullah the Butcher was from a compilation 7″. If you want to check out tthere Roadside Rendezvous album and the follow up seven inch (although you can’t download the sample of dirt from philly’s own serial killer Gary Heidnick’s yard) – the links are below:

Ruin – Terminal Flexi & White Rabbit Demo

Some more Ruin releases the first is a flexi disc that came with Terminal Magazine. There are two Ruin tracks and then some other bands (I included all of them here.) The second is the White Rabbit demo tape which came out before Fiat Lux. I didn’t have a cover for my tape but I found the picture on the Ruin Discography site Songs of Ruin.
On that site it says the tape is only the cover of White Rabbit but my tape had three songs. That version of White Rabbit was used on the cd.
Here are some quotes from the members of Ruin on this flexi and tape:
“flexi was before heho, before the compilation [proof] recording was done at some small studio if i remember correctly [that was actually someone’s attic] I don’t remember 13th & samson- i remember the attic first, & later in someone living room studio [proof first recording]” – Richard Hutchins (drummer/percussionist)
“I don’t recall who engineered it or where. Obviously it was Ruin’s first release. I got a kick out of hardcore punk being on the same disc as experimental abstract music (Furry Couch). Reflected my own schizoid tastes for such sounds.

Besides that I throw in a couple more tracks one is the version of White Rabbit from Fiat Lux (I figured if you have the cd you might want this version as well) Second is a cover of Hero by Superchunk. It’s from an ep called The Laughter Guns EP. I sort of remember hearing that the drummer from Superchunk grew up in Philly and was a fan of Ruin. Besides that I fond some more Flyers, t-shirt picture from the reunion shows, an insert that I found and am not sure where it came from plus this interview from an old zine Rodman Rave click here to view it
I’m working on some Ruin video from a show from 1986 hopefully I will get that up soon.

Big Black @ the Crypt 10-30-85

This video is painful for me I was at this show but left before Big Black went on. I was a freshman in college and had an early class the next morning. The worst part which I couldn’t have known then was I would later change my major and leave Drexel for the much cheaper Temple ( I could have gone anywhere but Temple is a hell of allot cheaper). I don’t even remember what class it was so it couldn’t have been very important. It was a packed show which for the Crypt (a basement in a West Philly row house) was not hard to do. So the video is basically all one static shot of Steve Albini and Santiago Durango. What more do you need a close-up of the drum machine?. It show was October 30th 1985 so there’s some songs from Atomizer but it was before the album was released. The video (I believe) was shot by ex-KDU DJ Jeff Jenkins. Legitimate Reason

This is Legitimate Reason Philly band from mid-80s. Their sound was influenced by DC/Dischord but they were very much a Philly Hardcore band. Although around only a short time they seemed to play a lot of shows (some flyers in the slideshow below) the members of the band seemed to be at every show, party, etc. Dan & Jon were also later in Stepping Razo. Dan is currently? in The Mojo Machine. If I get more info on what the former members of this band did after or are doing currently I’ll update the post. Included in this post is their 7″ on Plus Records (Recorded at Inner Ear) and their demo tape which include a cover of Let it Be and the last untitled thing is not really a song just something that was on the end of the tape.
